Bridge Treatment

Bridge Treatment

The loss of teeth doesn't affect the only outside appearance and smile but also lead to many oral issues and systemic problems such as difficulty in chewing, speaking, impaction of other tissues, resorption of bone where the teeth has been lost and that is why many treatments are required to treat such problems. One of the most important treatments in cosmetic and restorative dentistry is dental bridges. It is a mold of teeth that are made in the lab to resemble natural teeth in design and function. The main purpose of dental bridges is to replace missing or extracted teeth. It is fixed on the jaw using pier abutments as support from either side of a missing tooth and this bridge depends on the neighbouring teeth to support the missing ones. They are made smaller to accommodate for the missing teeth to carry the bridge.

Advantages of dental bridges

The features of dental bridges are many, the main advantage is that it has an aesthetic and restorative function, most importantly:
* it replaces missing teeth and so maintains the surrounding tissue, preserves the bone where the tooth has been extracted and prevents resorption.
* it improve the shape of the smile and it preserves the profile of the face preventing signs of aging that may result from loss of teeth or leaving it untreated.
* help to regain confidence in oneself and feel comfortable and not embarrassed during speech
* it protects the surrounding natural teeth from tilting or migrating into the extraction space and so prevents malalignment in the future.
* it improves showing and makes mastication easier with no worries.

Cases of dental bridges

The replacement of teeth using dental bridges is used when one or more teeth have been lost, on the condition that: -the neighbouring teeth are in good condition and can withstand being trimmed down and have a bridge placed on it. -that the patient has to be in good overall health -that the patient should not suffer from any chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension -that the gum is in good condition and enough bone support is available

Types of Bridge

Maryland Bridge

Maryland Bridge
This type of traditional bridge depends on the natural neighbouring teeth on either side of the missing tooth. It is different than other bridges as it doesn’t cover the adjacent teeth completely but it is cemented via a frame that is made of metal or porcelain that is placed on the supporting teeth abutments, cemented behind it.

Bridges supported on Implants

Bridges supported on Implants This type of bridge is considered the most stable and has longest life expectancy but it needs implants first placed as abutments to support the bridge rather than just crowns on natural teeth. Usually only one implant will be placed so support the missing teeth and this bridge is fixed on the implanted tooth. This procedure requires two steps, the first step to place the implant tooth and stabilise them in the jaw and the next step to place a bridge on the implants and this whole process will take a few months to be completed.

Traditional Dental Bridges

Those type of dental bridge is the commonest type that is used on dentistry. It consists of more than one tooth or more than one crown made of porcelain and it is cemented on the adjacent neighbouring teeth. This type of bridge is appropriate when there is good and healthy abutment teeth on either side of the space to carry the replacement teeth.
